James Madison University Online SLP Program Overview

This part-time program takes three years to complete, consisting of two to three courses per semester. Since the 2014-2015 school year, there has been a 100% employment rate among graduates of James Madison University’s online master’s in speech-language pathology program.

JMU’s online SLP program aligns with the school’s on-campus SLP master’s degree program. All students must meet the same academic and clinical requirements as on-campus students. 

If you pursue an online master’s in speech pathology at James Madison University, your curriculum will address swallowing and communication disorders across the lifespan. 

Students participate in online academic coursework, as well as five clinical practicum experiences. The first clinical practicum is on campus, supervised by a James Madison University clinical educator. This on-campus practicum occurs during the summer following the first year of academic coursework and lasts for six weeks. 

Students are required to complete a minimum of 375 clinical hours under the supervision of an SLP who is certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and holds licensure in the state in which they practice.

Other program requirements include:

  • Students must attend a two-day in-person orientation at James Madison University’s Harrisonburg campus in Virginia.
  • Students must complete all graduate-level coursework with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Students must participate in a six-week clinical placement at James Madison University’s Harrisonburg campus in Virginia.
  • Students must participate in four additional clinical placements under the supervision of a qualified SLP, which will require a minimum of three to four days per week of commitment for each semester-long placement. Clinical placements are arranged and scheduled by the James Madison University SLP program.
  • Students must also meet the requirements outlined in the Essential Skills Document (PDF, 123 KB), including certain cognitive abilities, communication, physical abilities and personal, behavioral and social attributes that follow the Council on Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) recommendations.

James Madison University Speech Pathology Admissions Requirements

The online master’s in SLP program at James Madison University accepts students every two years. The admissions cycle for the next cohort typically begins in the fall, with deadlines in November and decisions released in January.

To be admitted into the James Madison University online SLP program, applicants must complete prerequisite undergraduate coursework in speech pathology and/or related areas with a grade of C or better. Courses in the following subjects must be completed as prerequisites:

  • Language Development
  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Ear and Voice Mechanism
  • Phonetics
  • Introduction to Audiology
  • Acoustics of Hearing and Speech

You’re also expected to complete basic sciences courses in statistics, physics or chemistry, biological science or social science as a prerequisite.

Prospective online master’s SLP students are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.25. There are no minimum GRE scores, although the school states successful applicants generally score above the 50th percentile.

No letters of recommendation are required for admission. Other admissions requirements include:

  • Personal written statement about your career goals and interest in pursuing an online master’s in SLP degree from JMU
  • Official GRE scores, unless you have a master’s degree, in which case GRE scores are not required
  • Official transcripts
  • Names and contact information for two references

There’s also an optional video submission, limited to three minutes, where applicants can introduce themselves and respond to a prompt.

James Madison University Accreditation

The online SLP program at James Madison University is accredited by the ASHA’s Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA).
