Online Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology at University of Akron

University of Akron Online SLP Program Overview

Each university accepts 22 students into the competitive program, which is known as the Cincinnati-Akron Collaborative Online Program. The University of Akron accepts students from all over the country. Every year since 2016, 100% of graduates have found SLP employment within one year of graduation.

There are no requirements to come to campus at any time during the program as all courses are online. Clinical placements are arranged in and around the student’s hometown. The lockstep, consecutive eight-semester program begins in January every year and lasts two years, eight months.

Courses are asynchronous, so you can access the course recordings whenever it’s convenient for you. Some instructors will require a live weekly or monthly chat discussion as part of the course, on an instructor-by-instructor basis.

To graduate with an online master’s in speech pathology at the University of Akron, students must successfully complete a minimum of 74 credit hours. Students take spring, summer and fall courses. Classes include:

Students must complete a total of five clinical practicum experiences for a minimum of two to three days per week. Clinical placements begin in the third semester of the program.

University of Akron Speech Pathology Admissions Requirements

To be eligible for the online master’s in speech pathology at the University of Akron, prospective students must hold an undergraduate degree with a major in speech-language pathology or must have completed post-baccalaureate in speech pathology, with a GPA of at least 3.0. Prerequisite coursework follows the ASHA standards for academic course requirements, including:

  • Biological Science
  • Physical Science
  • Behavioral/Social Science Coursework
  • Language Science and Acquisition
  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism
  • Hearing and Speech Science

Applicants must submit a completed application with the intent to major in speech-language pathology. The application is completed with the Centralized Application Service for Communication Science and Disorders Programs (CSDCAS) and must include:

  • Official transcript(s)
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty, employers, etc., with one being from an in-field instructor
  • GRE scores, which must be current within five years from the first day of the term the applicant will begin the graduate program. Quantitative and Verbal scores must be at or above the 10th percentile. For Analytical Writing, a score of 3.5 or above is required
  • Resume
  • Statement of purpose

Applications must be received by June 1 for consideration into the program. Invited applicants must participate in a group interview, which is web-based for remote students.

University of Akron Accreditation

The University of Akron online SLP program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
