Western Kentucky University Online SLP Program Overview

Classes at the online master’s in speech pathology at Western Kentucky University meet during the evening, typically between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. central time. Since students need clinical hours prior to getting their master’s in speech pathology, they will need to attend a six-week summer internship on campus. Then, once completed, students can go to clinical externships in other locations off campus.

Students are expected to complete 60 course credits prior to graduation, and the core curriculum includes classes like Research Methodology in CSD; Speech Science; Dysphagia; Speech Sound Disorders; Fluency Disorders; and Aphasia. Students need 12 hours of electives as well as eight credit hours of clinical courses. They can earn these through Clinical Methods in Speech-Language Pathology, the clinical internship and the clinical externship.

Once they complete clinical training and their course credits, they may be eligible to apply for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competence, which is known as the gold standard for speech-language pathology employment.
