Find the Best Delaware Speech Pathology Program for You

Each state has its own requirements for registering or licensing speech-language pathologists. If you wish to practice as a speech pathologist in Delaware, it’s important to be aware of the licensing requirements in that state. Only you can decide if speech pathology programs in Delaware are right for you.

Delaware’s SLP license requirements include:

  • A master’s degree in speech pathology.
  • Completion of at least 400 hours of supervised clinical experience, with a minimum of 25 hours in clinical observations and at least 375 hours of direct patient contact.
  • At least 325 practicum hours completed at the graduate level.
  • At least 36 weeks of full-time, on-the-job experience at 35 hours per week, or the part-time equivalent, with a total of 1,260 hours. At least 80% of those hours must be spent in direct patient contact.
  • Mentorship under an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist.
  • Attainment of at least a “3” score in core skills on the SLP Clinical Fellowship Skills Inventory Form.
  • At least the nationally accepted passing score on the national examination.
  • A completed application form and payment of required fees.

Speech pathology master’s programs are designed to prepare future SLPs for these rigorous requirements.

Getting into a speech pathology program in Delaware requires a bachelor’s degree and completion of prerequisite courses such as Phonetics and Phonology, Speech Science, Speech-Language Development, Clinical Principles for Management of CSD and Intro to Audiology. A grade of at least a B in each of these prerequisite courses is required. Completion of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology courses are also recommended.

On-Campus and Online Speech Pathology Programs in Delaware

As the second-smallest state in the country, it should be no surprise that options are limited for those considering SLP programs in Delaware. In fact, there is only one master’s program in speech pathology in the state that is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and it’s offered by the University of Delaware.
