Find the Best Georgia Speech Pathology Program for You

If you want to become a speech pathologist and are thinking about attending a Georgia-based speech-language pathology program, it’s a good idea to explore SLP programs that best suit you. You also may want to make sure you pursue a program that will help prepare you to meet state licensing requirements.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) reports the following speech-language pathologist licensing requirements in Georgia:

  • Earn a master’s degree (or higher) in speech pathology from an accredited program.
  • Complete a supervised clinical practicum through an accredited program, with at least 375 hours of direct supervision and 25 hours of observation. At least 325 of those clinical hours need to be completed as a graduate student.
  • Complete a Paid Clinical Experience (PCE) that meets Georgia’s requirements, typically at least 36 weeks of full-time work (minimum 30 hours per week), with board-defined part-time equivalents.
  • Pass the Praxis exam required for Georgia licensure.
  • To renew a Georgia SLP license, you must complete 2.0 CEUs (20 clock hours) each biennium (with pro-rating rules for newly issued licenses).

Many factors contribute to deciding whether or not a speech pathology degree is worth it for you. Evaluating factors like whether a program is accredited, where it’s located, whether the program cost is feasible, and the types of learning experiences it offers can help you make this decision. It can also help you narrow your choices and prepare to apply to speech pathology school. Don’t forget to consider whether and how Georgia speech therapy programs help you acquire your clinical hours and prepare to get a Georgia SLP license.

Alternatively, online speech-language pathology (SLP) master’s programs may offer more scheduling and location flexibility for students living in Georgia. Some programs may include hybrid or online coursework, which can reduce commuting time, though most SLP master’s programs still require in-person clinical training.
