Find the Best New Jersey Speech Pathology Program for You
To find the best New Jersey speech therapy program for you, it may help to consider factors such as accreditation, admission requirements, in-person versus online options, specializations, cost, New Jersey SLP license requirements and clinical hours needed.
It may benefit you to ensure the universities you consider have speech-language programs that are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Accreditation ensures educational standards exist at all schools across the board and signals to employers that you’re prepared for the workplace when you graduate.
Admission requirements for a master’s program in speech-language pathology may vary from school to school. In general, you’ll need a minimum GPA of 3.0 to 3.3. In addition, some schools require certain grades for specific undergraduate prerequisite courses. As part of (or in addition to) your bachelor’s degree, you may benefit from courses in statistics, biology and social/behavioral sciences. Some schools also require you to observe an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist for a certain number of hours, commonly 25.
Graduate degrees can be expensive, but if you’re passionate about helping speech language patients, you may find a career in speech pathology to be well worth the cost of an SLP program. Scholarships and grants may also make the cost more manageable. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects 25% growth in the speech-language pathology industry from 2019-2029, much greater than the average for all occupations. Median annual pay for speech-language pathologists in 2019 was $79,120, ranging from $70,290 for those employed in educational services to $95,250 for those in nursing and residential-care facilities
