How to Choose the Best SLP Programs for You

Once you’ve decided to embark on the road to become a speech pathologist, there’s no shortage of speech therapist programs for you to choose from, but these programs aren’t all the same. From differences in curriculum, cost and specialization, you may need to do some research and decide on the best speech language pathology program for you. Next, you may want to consider your career goals and how each program can help you to meet them.

When comparing the different programs available, be sure to consider:

  • Your desire for flexibility, such as online SLP programs
  • Your desired career path and salary
  • Your desired work setting
  • SLP licensure requirements for your state
  • Optional certification requirements to become a CCC-SLP
  • Your desired areas of specialty
  • The skills you want to develop from your education and how each program will help you develop those skills
  • Whether you want or need to study part time, full time and/or online
  • The program’s admittance requirements, including GPA minimums and GRE scores
  • Prerequisite courses or degree programs required by each speech pathology program
  • Program cost, financial resources available to you and how the program will fit into your budget

CAA Accredited Speech Pathology Graduate Programs

Whichever program you choose, it’s recommended that it is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA). The CAA helps to ensure that graduate programs for audiologists and speech language pathologists provide a quality education of the highest standards. CAA-accredited programs equip students with a core set of skills and knowledge that they will need when practicing professionally.

There are other beneficial reasons to attend an accredited program. Accreditation can ensure that your teachers are qualified to be teaching you the material, increase the likelihood of your credits transferring if you want to move schools and ensure that potential employers will accept your degree and qualifications.

Keep in mind that while a school may be accredited, programs are accredited individually. Take the time to verify that any program you’re considering holds CAA accreditation. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) offers a degree program search that identifies accredited programs.

Online and Part-Time Speech Pathology Master’s Programs to Consider

Are you looking for a little bit of extra flexibility when completing your master’s in speech pathology degree? There are many ways in which speech pathology programs may give you options on how, when and where you complete your degree so that you can choose a way that works best for you. These options are as follows:

  • Part time speech pathology programs: Some SLP master’s programs allow you to choose either a full or part time schedule. If you have other obligations during the week, a part time program may be easier to fit into your busy schedule. Note that in many of these programs, the classes can be taken part time but practicum requirements may be full time.
  • Online speech pathology programs: Some speech pathology master’s programs offer the option to complete classes completely online, meaning you can complete a program without having to live close by or sit in a classroom.

Online degree programs typically offer the scheduling flexibility you’ll need to balance your education and a full-time job, which can be an important benefit, too.

The following speech pathology master’s programs offer a part-time option, the option of taking all classes online or both:

Speech Pathology Master’s Programs No GRE Required

Traditionally, graduate programs have required Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores from all applicants. The GRE is a four-hour test that encompasses both multiple choice questions and written components. The test is designed to evaluate your writing, verbal and math skills, but it can be a barrier to admission if you haven’t taken the test or don’t perform well on standardized tests.

In response, some programs have stopped requiring GRE test scores for admission. This decision was partially prompted by studies that found that GRE scores and student success weren’t as closely linked as once believed. While some schools waive GRE scores entirely, other schools have begun to allow test waivers if students have previous relevant work experience or meet minimum undergraduate GPA requirements.

If you don’t have GRE scores, or if your scores aren’t stellar, you can choose from master in speech pathology programs that don’t require you to submit your scores. According to ASHA EdFind, below is a list of universities that don’t require the GRE:

  • Andrews University
  • Calvin University
  • College of Saint Rose
  • CSU Fullerton
  • CSU San Marcos
