Summary of New Mexico Speech Pathology State License Requirements

To gain New Mexico speech pathology licensure, applicants must have a master’s in speech pathology or an equivalent degree.

Applicants must also present a certified copy of their Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC) or proof that they have completed a clinical fellowship year. New Mexico also requires applicants to pass a national exam and a jurisprudence exam.

Speech Pathology Initial Licensure for New Mexico

For initial licensure as an SLP in New Mexico, applicants must submit official transcripts showing they’ve earned at least a master’s degree in speech pathology and a certified document attesting that all requirements of the degree have been met.

Applicants must also submit a certified copy of a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC)  from a nationally recognized national speech-language association or proof of a clinical fellowship year. New Mexico doesn’t specify clinical hours required, but to earn a CCC credential, prospective SLPs must have 1,260 hours of practical clinical experience during a Clinical Fellowship. The applicant must pass a national standard SLP exam and a jurisprudence exam. 

If the applicant is licensed in another state, the issuing jurisdiction must send verification.

Speech Language Pathology Licensure Exemptions for New Mexico

New Mexico grants some speech pathology licensure exemptions. Individuals that are exempt from SLP licensing requirements include licensed physicians, orthodontists, certified teachers of the deaf and SLP students who are taking supervised training. Other licensed professionals who are acting within their scope of practice are also exempt.

Reciprocity for Speech Therapists in New Mexico

New Mexico has license reciprocity for speech pathologists who are licensed in another state. It will issue a license by reciprocity as long as the other state’s licensure requirements meet or exceed those of New Mexico. The applicant’s license must be in good standing with no disciplinary actions pending against the applicant.

Interim Practice for Aspiring Speech Pathologists in New Mexico

Clinical fellows must apply for an interim license at the start of their fellowship period. This temporary license allows students to practice under supervision. Applicants must meet all the coursework and practicum requirements for a master’s degree in speech pathology. Either before applying for the interim license or during the first year the fellow has a Clinical Fellow license, they must pass a nationally recognized exam.

Continuing Education for Speech Language Pathologists in New Mexico

New Mexico requires SLP license holders to complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years in order to maintain their credential. The CE hours must be in the field of speech language pathology unless a license holder seeks and receives permission to take hours in a related field. Licensees must submit evidence that they have fulfilled the continuing education requirement to renew their license.
