A state speech-language pathology license in Colorado requires the applicant to have a master’s degree. A clinical fellowship and passage of an exam are also required.1

Summary of Colorado Speech Pathology State License Requirements

Colorado speech pathology licensure requires the applicant have a master’s in speech pathology or higher degree in communication disorders. Applicants should access the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Application Checklist (PDF, 128 KB) before beginning the process. For the Colorado speech pathology license, an individual should successfully complete a clinical fellowship accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).1

Speech Pathology Initial Licensure for Colorado

According to ASHA1, Colorado speech pathology licensure requires applicants to complete three steps before verification: 

  1. Speech-language pathologists must have a master’s or higher degree in communication sciences and disorders granted by an accredited higher education institution. 
  2. Speech-language pathologists must complete a clinical fellowship before applying for a Colorado speech pathology license. 
  3. Speech-language pathologists must pass a national exam.

Speech Language Pathology Licensure Exemptions for Colorado

Colorado speech language pathology licensure exempts the following: school speech pathologists who are paid via an administrative unit or state-operated unit, licensed individuals who are working in the scope of their practice, students enrolled in a course at an accredited institution who are also pursuing a degree, clinical fellows and qualified speech-language pathologists from another state or country who are on a temporary basis.1

Reciprocity for Speech Therapists in Colorado

Speech-language pathology applicants may apply for certification if they hold a current, valid license in a jurisdiction with equivalent qualifications for Colorado speech therapy licensure.1

Interim Practice for Aspiring Speech Pathologists in Colorado

Aspiring Colorado speech pathologists can receive a provisional certification as a speech-language pathologist to those who are working on their clinical fellowship. The provisional certification for speech pathology licensure in Colorado expires 24 months after speech therapy license verification.1

Continuing Education for Speech Language Pathologists in Colorado

Maintaining your Colorado license can be completed through participation in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program or a program of continuing professional competency through an accredited group/institution. CE hours can be exempt for military service.1
