Summary of Idaho Speech Pathology State License Requirements

An Idaho speech pathology license requires certain criteria for all potential candidates. They must have a master’s in speech pathology from an accredited institution as well as pass a national exam. Before completion of Idaho speech pathology licensure, candidates must complete supervised professional experience.3

Speech Pathology Initial Licensure for Idaho

According to ASHA3,Idaho speech pathology licensure requires candidates to fulfill the following criteria before license verification: 

  • Candidates must have a master’s or doctoral degree in speech-language pathology from a nationally accredited school with a curriculum approved by the Board.
  • Candidates must take and pass a Praxis exam.
  • Candidates must complete a supervised academic clinical practicum and supervised postgraduate professional experience.

Speech Language Pathology Licensure Exemptions for Idaho

The following individuals are exempt from Idaho speech language pathology licensure, according to ASHA3:

  • Licensed professionals who work in the area in which they are licensed.
  • Individuals who are working in a supervised setting.
  • Individuals who are working in a school setting who hold a pupil personnel services certificate.
  • College/university students seeking a speech pathology degree.
  • Individuals from another state who provide consultation to a state licensee or who conduct activities under the supervision of a licensed SLP. 

Reciprocity for Speech Therapists in Idaho

Licensed individuals from another state must have a current, active license that is issued by a regulatory authority in that state. In order to get a Idaho speech therapy license, an applicant must not have any disciplinary actions within the last five years. Their license should not have been voluntarily surrendered as well.3

Interim Practice for Aspiring Speech Pathologists in Idaho

A provisional permit is required to have speech licensure in Idaho while the individual is completing the required postgraduate experience.3

Continuing Education for Speech-Language Pathologists in Idaho

Maintaining your Idaho license requires completing 10 hours of continuing education each year. A maximum of five CE hours may be carried forward. Beginning January 1, 2021, SLPs must complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every three years.3
