Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in New York identify, assess and treat common speech and language disorders including cognitive communication and swallowing disorders. SLPs assist people of all ages, from infants to older adults. Applicants for a speech pathology state license can work in healthcare facilities, education facilities and other places where speech-language pathology services are needed.1

Summary of New York Speech Pathology State License Requirements

New York has a total of 34 accredited higher education institutions with programs in communicative disorders.1 For speech pathology licensure, applicants must meet application requirements for a speech pathology license as well as complete clinical observation hours. The master’s in speech pathology must also come from an accredited institution as determined by the New York State Education Department.

Speech Pathology Initial Licensure for New York

Applicants for New York speech pathology licensure must obtain a master’s degree or equivalent and complete the following:

  1. Complete a supervised practicum of 400 clinical hours.
  2. Complete 36 weeks of supervised experience.
  3. Pass an exam determined to be acceptable from the New York State Education Department and receive speech license verification. 

Applicants for New York speech-language pathology licensure must meet the criteria before applying for a license.

Speech Language Pathology Licensure Exemptions for New York

Speech pathology licensure exempts any licensed professionals operating within their realm of practice. Other exemptions from a New York speech language pathology license include any government employee or educators in public schools or higher education who perform SLP duties. Those individuals who work in a supervised practice and also a person licensed in another state if their services are performed for no more than 30 days per calendar year.

Reciprocity for Speech Therapists in New York

A New York speech therapy license can be extended to holders of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC)Applicants from other states who are seeking a New York speech therapy licensure should have completed a program and completed a minimum of 60 semester professional hours. Applicants who seek the New York speech therapy license should have two years of professional experience within six years preceding the application as well as meet exam requirements and hold certification.

Interim Practice for Aspiring Speech Pathologists in New York

A limited New York speech pathology license is available to any qualified person working in a clinical or academic setting. This availability must be under the supervision of a licensed speech‐language pathologist for a time period that fits the experience requirement for a New York speech pathology licensure.

Continuing Education for Speech Language Pathologists in New York

Maintaining your New York license requires completion of at least 30 continuing education hours. Dual licensees need to complete continuing competency requirements for each registration; however, 10 CE hours (continuing education hours) earned in related subjects can be used for both registrations.
