New Jersey speech pathology licensure requires candidates have a master’s in speech pathology. They must also complete a clinical professional experience that is supervised by an SLP who currently has a speech pathology license in New Jersey. Speech Language Pathology Licensure Exemptions for New Jersey
New Jersey speech pathology licensure exempts the following individuals: physicians and individuals under the direct supervision/control of a physician; federal employees; an individual certified as a speech correctionist or speech-language specialist; students/fellows/trainees; an individual engaged in a licensed activity; and persons with a business interest, as long as clinical services are licensed by a speech-language pathologists.1
Reciprocity for Speech Therapists in New Jersey
An applicant who is currently licensed in another state with similar requirements can receive New Jersey speech pathology licensure. They can get a speech pathology license in New Jersey without providing proof of a passing score on the Praxis Exam.1
Interim Practice for Aspiring Speech Pathologists in New Jersey
New residents to New Jersey may receive a temporary speech pathology license in the state (six-month minimum) if they have applied for licensure and hold a state license in their previous state of residence. This temporary license is good for one year and cannot be renewed. Clinical interns must obtain a temporary license for a period not to exceed 18 months.1
Continuing Education for Speech Language Pathologists in New Jersey
New Jersey speech pathology licensees must complete 20 hours of continuing education per biennium. Five CE hours in excess may be carried over if the hours are earned within the six months prior to license renewal.1
