Summary of Indiana Speech Pathology State License Requirements
Indiana speech pathology licensure requires candidates to have a master’s in speech pathology as well as submit required documentation such as a criminal background check, complete required supervised clinical experience as part of graduate training and complete a supervised clinical fellowship. These hours must be completed during a clinical fellowship. In addition, candidates must pass two exams: the national ETS Praxis exam in Speech-Language Pathology (Praxis Series) and an Indiana jurisprudence exam with a score of at least 75.

Speech Pathology Initial Licensure for Indiana
According to ASHA, Indiana speech pathology licensure candidates must meet the following requirements for initial licensure in Indiana:
- Candidates must submit an official transcript verifying a master’s degree (or equivalent) in speech-language pathology from an accredited academic institution.
- Candidates must submit certification from their educational institution showing completion of four hundred (400) hours of direct supervised clinical experience.
- Candidates must complete a national criminal history background check as part of the application process.
- Candidates must complete a clinical fellowship of at least nine (9) consecutive months of full-time employment (or the equivalent), not to exceed eighteen (18) consecutive months.
- Candidates must submit official ETS Praxis Series scores showing a passing score on the national exam.
- Candidates must pass the Indiana jurisprudence examination (minimum passing score: seventy-five percent (75%)).
Applicants may submit a current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) as a substitute for the following requirements: official transcript, direct supervised clinical experience, clinical fellowship, and official ETS-Praxis Series scores. Applicants must request that an original ASHA letter of verification (with a current expiration date) be sent directly to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. Indiana law allows the (education) professional standards board to issue a renewal license to an individual who was licensed by the Professional Standards Board before July 1, 2005, and who is not licensed as a speech-language pathologist under Indiana’s current SLP licensure law.
Speech Language Pathology Licensure Exemptions for Indiana
Indiana law allows certain limited speech-language pathology activities without an Indiana SLP license, including services provided by physicians/surgeons within medical practice, professionals licensed under other Indiana laws working within their own scope, U.S. government employees acting within federal employment, students completing supervised clinical training as part of an educational program, and nonresidents who meet specific statutory conditions (including time limits and cooperation with an Indiana-licensed practitioner).
Reciprocity for Speech Therapists in Indiana
Indiana offers licensure by reciprocity for speech-language pathologists who hold an active license in another state by requiring an application and fee, a criminal background check, official verification of the out-of-state license(s) sent directly from the issuing board, and passing the Indiana jurisprudence (law) exam (minimum passing score: 75%). Indiana may waive the national exam requirement for applicants who hold a current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) (or another nationally recognized certification accepted by the Board) when the required verification is provided, while practice under federal (U.S. government) authority is generally treated as a statutory exemption for work performed within the scope of federal employment rather than a separate reciprocity pathway.
Interim Practice for Aspiring Speech Pathologists in Indiana
Individuals completing a clinical fellowship in Indiana may be issued a nonrenewable initial license that allows them to practice while the fellowship is in progress. This interim license expires when the individual is granted full speech-language pathologist licensure or after 18 months from the start of the clinical fellowship, whichever occurs first.
Continuing Education for Speech Language Pathologists in Indiana
Maintaining an Indiana speech-language pathology license requires completing 36 clock hours of continuing education each biennial renewal period, and no more than six (6) hours of that requirement may be earned through self-study (and the learning activities must relate to the practice of speech-language pathology or audiology).
