University of Northern Colorado SLP Program Overview

UNC’s online Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology is a nine-semester program meant for working adults. By completing the program, including clinical hours and internships, graduates should be prepared to pursue certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and apply for entry-level positions as speech-language pathologists..

This three-year program is designed to meet the needs of non-traditional students who have family and work commitments that make studying full time and on campus impractical. Courses are online, although students are required to be on campus for up to three weeks during the first summer (the third semester out of nine), and for a full-time, 12-week internship during the final summer of the program.

The program uses a clinician-research model, which offers a foundation in both evidence-based practice (EBP) and academics. During the program, students learn to formulate clinical questions, collect data, review research, evaluate outcomes and present findings.

Applicants must be either employed as an SLPA or equivalent, or under a Temporary Teacher Endorsement (TTE)/SLP. Students have to maintain employment as an assistant at a site where they can complete clinical hours under the supervision of an ASHA-certified speech language pathologist. If your place of employment isn’t a public school, then you’re required to complete a second full-time internship at a school, which adds a 10th semester to the program.

Students are placed in a cohort, which is a group that moves through the program together. The program requires students to complete at least 63 credit hours, which includes both classroom work and clinical practicums. They have to finish a certain number of hours of therapy and speech-language evaluations, a certain percentage of which must be supervised by a professional who holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP). Students also complete internships in both a public school and a medical setting.

Students who finish the program are eligible to

  • Take the National Examination in Speech-Language Sciences (NESPA).
  • Complete a clinical fellowship year and apply for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from ASHA.
  • Apply for a teacher’s license from the Colorado Department of Education or in a majority of other states.
